On Saturday, 14 September, several of us from RUC had the pleasure of joining a bicycle tour of Alex run by a charismatic 22-year-old entrepreneur born and raised in Alex, Jeffrey Mulaudzi.

Jeffrey’s enthusiasm is infectious and we were buoyed along by his energy for a few hours while he took us on a tour of interesting sites in Alex, including the primary school attended by ANC luminaries such as Mbeki and Motlanthe, musi-cal greats Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, as well as Tata Madiba’s old house (everybody seems to be able to lay claim to a slice of Mandela!).

We visited a shebeen where we drank home-brewed beer out of a calabash and listened while Jeffrey regaled us with stories, interesting historical facts and traditions, and taught us a few relevant words in the local lingo. We visited his shack where he lives with his mother, and got a feel for this warm and friendly community where people were delighted to welcome us.

An experience never to be forgotten!
