COVID-19 has exposed and widened the inequality gap for learners and small businesses in Alex. They could not have online classes or webinars or meetings, which placed them at a massive disadvantage. Therefore together with a team from Alex we are working on solving the connectivity challenges that make learning very difficult in Alex. This would assist learners and students to access study material online, as well as the many entrepreneurs in Alex, for whom there is amazing online material available.
There are currently three possible channels:
- Set up two main sites at Ikemeleng and Altrec that can be used exclusively for online learning. Wifi routers would be installed to provide access. Volunteers would assist at each site.
- Partnering with Alex internet cafes. This would cost R30 for 2 hours of access.
- MTN Aggregated Reverse Billed Data, which allows a training company to share it’s material with a customer but the customer still needs to be able to access it, either at an MTN rate of 8c/Mb or other network rate of 25c/Mb. Either way this would incur a significant cost.
