Gift Sedibeng - Sigaculinary Restaurant

Gift’s story

After qualifying as a chef through City&Guilds, Gift worked overseas for a year and fell in love with the Mexican culture. He saved up so that he could start a restaurant in Alex to be able to introduce the Mexican flavours infused with the Kasi flavours.

“We attract a lot of people outside our township so business before looting was a lot better because our customers would come to the township for our authentic dishes, especially tourists.”

The impact of COVID and the looting

“The looting affected our business because we are a tourist attraction restaurant so with the looting, our business was really affected. Our customers don’t feel safe coming to the restaurant due to the looting and we had to also close down so we were safe. We lost customers also because we couldn’t deliver food to them as most roads were closed down.”
