“My business started 6 years ago when I was homeless, broke and with no one or anywhere to turn to. I started renting space at other people’s places & taverns just to make ends meet. At all of them I was later chased away cause of the times I couldn’t afford rent. Till one day I saw space, which was then a dumping area. With the last of what I had in my pocket,I cleaned and poured concrete just so I can start again. Some people called the cops on me and some again tried to chase me away, saying I didnt belong there. I had no choice but to stand my ground.
5 years later, I can say I have my very own registered carwash and again, I’m no longer homeless. I’m the best in Alex now, with what I do… I perfect my craft and with that my life has changed so much. I just need help here and there from the right people whilst again learning to be patient.”
The impact of COVID and the looting
In his words: “Before covid…my business was growing very well. I managed to even buy equipment I never thought I’d own without getting help from someone. Just as it was growing, the pandemic happened and everything started being hard. Still today, I struggle to get shelter, sponsorship… and funding. I’m back on hand to mouth and forced to work alone so I can make ends meet.”
