Rays of Hope spent time in March teaching children from our Hlayisanani ECD centre (ages 3 – 6) and our Yarona after-schools programme (Grades 1 – 3) in Alexandra about their rights and responsibilities.

The session was facilitated by the Graca Machel Trust, together with Save the Children South Africa and SIDA using the HAKI booklet, designed to engage children with catchy animated photos to teach them about their rights in language that they can understand.

“In Alex, the children often witness and even fall victim to traumatic incidents and child rights offences, and many are unaware of how to deal with these situations, or that they should seek help from an adult or a professional,” says Tsholo Mabeleng, Education Social Worker at Rays of Hope.

The programme is aimed at young children with the goal of ensuring that they are able to identify and report instances of abuse through these grassroots interventions.

Rays of Hope’s goal is to continue to provide these valuable and insightful sessions to youth of all ages across Alexandra.
