Teenage Boys & Girls Support Group

Being a teenager is tough; being a teenager in Alexandra, growing up with violence, trauma, uncertainty and poverty has an immense negative impact on anyone, let alone teenagers. For this reason we run a weekly group for over 150 young people to provide a safe space for facilitated discussions.

Our Alex teenagers grow up projecting and manifesting different behavioral problems ranging from violence, drug abuse and early sexual debuts. Therefore the group sessions address these issues.

Activities include:

  • understanding who they are
  • creating a vision board and development plan for themselves
  • discussing healthy ways of dealing with peer pressure
  • anger management
  • educating on sexuality and pregnancy
  • leadership, self-esteem and self-worth

The girls and boys meet separately to discuss sensitive topics.

In the process of learning a lot of unresolved issues come up which leads to counseling and psycho-social support for the teenagers.

The highlight of every year is the camp, which is detailed on the Excursions and Camp page.

Every year ends with a gala dinner, at which the young people get to dress up and celebrate the beautiful people that they are.
The theme for 2022 was “Still I Rise”, which spoke to overcoming circumstances and difficulties and rising above.
