“My partner and I were unemployed. However God has blessed us with hand skills. My partner Simon is a gardener and handyman by profession (previous work experience). I was catering for private functions most of the time. I was approached by a friend, while catering for an event for a 3-day event for 50 people. She advised me that I could use Uber eats to deliver food for me. Simon and I then decided to register our own business – Their Heart in January 2021.
One of the entrepreneurs from the Alexbiz WhatsApp group asked if anyone knew a gardener. And that’s how we got to manage the gardening services for a complex.
We also have a property that we were renting out to Somalians in Wynberg.”
The impact of COVID and the looting
“All has been well, until recently. Our daily rate was cut off by 60%. And honestly that was our main income. It has really affected us immensely. We have 5 kids to maintain. We can’t get other clients as they are too far from us and transportation is a challenge when it comes to pricing our clients.
Also the Wynberg property was looted and all the Somalian’s stock was stolen and the security gate dismantled.”
