Mandela Day marks a celebration of the legacy left by our iconic leader, Nelson Mandela. While many mark the day by giving just 67 minutes of their time, Rays of Hope dedicated an entire month to making real, lasting impact to the community of Alexandra. Our years of community development work have taught us that real impact takes more than a single day, and that is the thinking behind our approach for 2026. Extending our efforts across the whole of July allowed us to coordinate more closely with our stakeholders, plan more effectively, and create deeper, more meaningful engagement between our partners and our children, a fitting way to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
Over the course of the month, we joined hands with our team, community partners and 33 stakeholders in activities aimed at restoring beauty and building lasting connections within our community. Below are some of the activities we spent our time on:
We achieved all of this through the support of our team, our community partners, and the many stakeholders who share our goals. Their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the month ensured that we met our goals for 2026, and our reach and impact went far beyond anything we could have imagined.
Our outreach focused on engaging the community through programmes that support positive change and meaningful connection. We achieved this by opening:
Thank You to Our Stakeholders
None of this would have been possible without the generosity of the 33 organisations, businesses, churches and individuals who partnered with us this Mandela Month. Their support ranged from monetary donations and food parcels to hands-on volunteering, painting, and gifts of time and skill. We are especially grateful to partners such as Tamela, PSG Insure, Davinci Hotel and Suites, Newzroom Afrika, Discovery, Sandton City, Absa Rewards, Santam Insurance, Vodacom and Nedbank, among many others, whose combined contributions of funding, food, toiletries, furnishings, fun days and painting projects touched every corner of our community.
We also welcomed several new stakeholders who reached out to us this year, and we look forward to building on these fresh relationships in the months ahead.
Looking Ahead
Dedicating a full month to these efforts gave us the time we needed to promote our initiatives and attract stakeholders in a way a single day never could. Looking forward, our focus is on securing sponsors who can support our more sustainable, ongoing needs, and on nurturing these valuable relationships over time so that our impact continues to grow year after year.
Reflecting on the month of July, the impact we made is a reminder of what Madiba said. We remain committed to serving our community through ongoing acts of kindness, and to leading with purpose as we continue to improve the community we serve.
