Education Support

The Education Support Department provides world-class educational programmes to children in Alexandra Township, from early childhood development to extra-curricular classes through Rose Act Saturday School for grades 1 to 11. Rays of Hope prioritises quality Early Childhood Development and Mathematics, Coding and English as the fundamental components of a child’s development.

AKANANI EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTRE

Akanani ECD centre provides access to quality pre-primary education to over 30 young children from the age of three years old, and from different backgrounds. This centre, comprised of four classes, features a well-equipped library and large playground, both of which are very seldom found in Alex. Rays of Hope ensures the learners at Akanani ECD receive a high standard of education and focuses on building a solid foundation in their early years. This includes providing access to good nutrition – crucial for  a child’s physical and cognitive development.

Key Priorities:

  • All teaching is delivered in English, which ensures that learners have a good understanding of the universal language by the time they start formal schooling. This is key to ensuring they are capable of reading with comprehension by the time they reach grade four, instead of becoming part of an alarming statistic in South Africa.
  • Proper nutrition and healthcare are essential for a child’s overall well-being. The children receive nutritious meals every day.
  • To enhance their learning experience, the centre houses a spacious library and play-area, which allows the children to exercise, play, read and learn in a safe environment.
  • Parents are engaged in the learning process. Home visits are conducted and psychosocial support provided to ensure that the child and their family benefits from the programme.

ROSE ACT SATURDAY SCHOOL

Rose Act was born in 1991 in the heart of Alexandra Township to provide learners in the community with the opportunity to improve their skills in English and Maths. The programme has since added coding to the subjects covered, facilitated by well-trained Saturday School tutors, educational resources, and support to help children reach their full academic potential.

Rose Act Saturday classes cover curricula taught in schools and provide additional academic support, assisting learners to grasp and master skills and reinforce learning for better educational outcomes.

During school holidays, learners take part in a full week holiday club programme which includes life skills, bible study, and problem solving and team work activities. Rose Act learners also participate in educational excursions and programmes to support their holistic education and development.
